I was suddenly roused from the mirage by the applause of the near-delirious audience who had been transported and deeply moved by the brilliance of the music …
Ricardo’s voice, husky with emotion, spoke out:
‘I found the music quite extraordinary, it aroused emotions in me of an intensity I have never before experienced. It stirred up, as nothing before ever has, troubling, disquieting feelings. It was like the rending of the veil between us and the Beyond, so overwhelming were its harmonies … It was as if everything in me that constitutes my soul had to condense down in order to vibrate in sympathy with it … I felt it gather anxiously inside me, in a globe of light …’
He fell silent. I looked across to where Marta had been …
She had come back. She was once more sitting in the armchair.
As I walked back to my house through the insistent drizzle, I felt as if a tumult of fiery, golden claws were whistling about me.
I was adrift in an orgy of mystery, until – in an attempt at lucidity – I managed to attribute the fantastic vision to the immortal nature of the music.
For the rest, I knew only that it had been a hallucination, because it was impossible to explain Marta’s strange disappearance in any other way. Besides, given the positions we had occupied in the room, even if her body really had dissolved, presumably I would have been the only one to notice. Indeed, it would have been unusual, in the presence of such powerful music, for someone even to have taken their eyes off its admirable exponent.
